Jumbo roll or 40s tissue: which works out cheaper for a hotel or office?

What "40s", "jumbo pack" and "jumbo roll" mean

• 40s: standard household toilet rolls sold in a bale. It is the most common way shops and offices buy tissue, and the bale is broken into outers for retail.
• Jumbo pack: a big pack of standard-size rolls, popular with families and small offices that want fewer trips to the shop.
• Jumbo roll: a single large roll on a wide core, made for wall dispensers in public washrooms. One jumbo roll replaces many standard rolls.

Exactly how many rolls are in a bale or pack differs between brands, so ask when you compare.

When a jumbo roll saves money

In a washroom used by many people every day, standard rolls run out fast, get taken, and get dropped on wet floors. A jumbo roll in a locked dispenser solves all three. The paper usually costs less per sheet, and cleaners change it far less often.

Jumbo rolls only work with a dispenser that fits them, so check the dispenser size first. If your washrooms have no dispensers, stay with standard rolls until you fit some.

When 40s are the better buy

• Hotel and lodge rooms, where guests expect a normal roll on a normal holder.
• Homes and small offices with a single toilet.
• Shops and kiosks that buy to resell. Customers buy rolls, not jumbo rolls.

To compare fairly, count how many rolls or jumbo rolls one washroom uses in a month, then multiply by the price of each. Most hotels and schools find that jumbo rolls in the busy public washrooms and 40s in the rooms gives the lowest total.
