Reading a roll size
Thermal rolls are labelled width × diameter × core, in millimetres. A 57 × 40 × 13 roll is 57 mm wide, 40 mm across, on a 13 mm core. The width must match your printer. The diameter only has to fit inside the paper compartment, and a fatter roll lasts longer between changes.
Which width is your printer?
- 57 mm rolls: small receipt printers, mobile and Bluetooth printers, card machines, many M-Pesa and agency printers, and older cash registers.
- 79–80 mm rolls: most counter POS printers in supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacies and hardware shops.
Not sure? Measure the width of the paper already in the printer, or bring the old core to the shop.

Questions
What thermal paper size does a POS printer use?
Most counter POS printers use 80 mm paper (sold as 79 × 60 or 79 × 80 rolls). Small receipt and mobile printers use 57 mm paper.
What does 57x40 mean on a thermal roll?
57 mm is the paper width and 40 mm is the roll's diameter. The width must match the printer; the diameter decides how long the roll lasts.
